I’ll never forget the first time I personally experienced Bike MS: City to Shore in Ocean City, New Jersey. I found myself surrounded by cyclists, their families, supporters and many volunteers. I knew the event was big, but I had no idea just how huge. As I walked down the boardwalk I looked at bikers as they walked by in their wildly colored jerseys and shorts. Since I was using a walker it was safe to assume that I had MS. When I looked at them I would smile and say thank you. Most smiled back and nodded. After a few of those exchanges I was extremely overwhelmed. It all felt very personal, like they had just ridden their butts off for me. It was a very special connection.
Through the years good friends have done the ride. One of those friends is Frank Putnick. He and his wife, Kathy have raised over $17,000 since his first ride in 2010 in support of the National MS Society. Their efforts continue to amaze and humble me. I have run out of ways to tell them and other cyclists how much I appreciate their efforts.
Their initial fundraising goal this year was $5000. Their goal is now $6001. I know they can reach that number and more. Kathy is an excellent fundraiser so I can’t imagine it not happening.
I haven’t actively done any fundraising for the cause in many years. Well, I am tossing my hat back into the ring. I am asking you to support Frank’s ride to create a world free of MS. I know I can count on you.
Bike MS is happening in two weeks on September 30 and October 1. Please support the Putnicks by donating via the link below. Thank you.
